| Mark Hathaway of Huntington won the state title with a remarkable 5.5-.5 performance. Mark won his first five games, then sewed up the title with a last round draw with Donald Griffith of St Albans. This was Mark's third year in the winner's circle, but the first time he has had the title all to himself. Donald Griffith and John W. Malutich of Salem shared second with records of 5-1. Although, Donald is normally at or near the top, this appears to have been a break-through tournament for John W.! John was also the top junior player in the event. Byron Funkhouser of Clarksburg was tops in the "B" class at 4.5-.5. Second place in "B" with records of 4-2 was shared by Joe Meadows (Beckley) , Dave Olsen (Charleston), and Jon Karraker (Morgantown). Mike Baker of Clarksburg and Jim Kirkpatrick of Beverly scored 3.5-2.5 to head "C" class. Shih-Houng Young of Morgantown, Terry Wassell (Morgantown), and Walt Rueckert (Elkins) tied for third in "C" at 2.5-2.5. Joe Montgomery of Clarksburg was first in class "D" at 3.5-2.5. Elias Stewart of Morgantown at 3-3 finished second and third place went to David Hundley of Beckley with a 2.5-3.5 record. The top scholastic player was Jason Young of Morgantown. Jim Walker of Charleston won both the 5 and 10-minute chess events. This year's tournament was held at the Hampton Inn in Buchannon, West Virginia September 1-3, 2001 and drew 40 players.
